Whatever dark, primitive, and revolting traits that simultaneously attract and repel us are featured in the horror genre. Scary movies are quite an unusual genre. It certainly seems counterintuitive that so many people would voluntarily immerse themselves in almost two hours of fear, disgust and terror. That version of the gene weakens the effect of a signalling chemical in the brain that helps control certain emotions. At its most basic, fear is an early warning system that senses menace and buys time to flee or grab the nearest frying pan. Try to point out how it is impossible, and if the scary things did exist, why would they target you in particular?
