How to Prevent Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes, principally Aedes aegypti. The common Dengue fever symptoms are: sudden onset of high fever, headache, nose and mouth bleeding, muscle and joint pain, vomiting and diarrhea. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening Dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into Dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs. Prevention concerns in avoiding mosquito bites when traveling to areas where Dengue occurs and when in U.S. areas, especially along the Texas-Mexico border, where Dengue might occur. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites in these areas is another key prevention measure. When indoors, stay in air-conditioned or screened areas. Use bed nets if sleeping areas are not screened or air-conditioned. Apply mosquito repellent to your clothing, shoes, and camping gear and bed netting and on your skin.
